This week’s notes
Why is the idea of shapeshifting so relevant right now?
Stepping through the veil at Samhain at the end of October opens a portal to a time of shedding and release, inviting in the swirling energy of change as we begin a new cycle through the Wheel of the Year and start thinking ahead to the end of the calendar year in December. We may have a sense of plans stirring but not yet being fully formed - things might seem elusive and nebulous, and we know we need the germination time of winter to allow our ideas to take shape and become more solid. (This is mirrored by the wider shift from autumn’s liquid element of water, towards the firmer ground of winter’s earth.)
The archetype for November on our Rewilding Wheel is the Shapeshifter: guardian of darkness, depth and complexity; known for unearthing hidden truths beneath the surface and embracing cyclical transformation - the continual ebb and flow of light and dark, life and death. Connected to the Zodiac sign of Scorpio, the Shapeshifter acts as a bridge between the watery Enchantress of October and the rooted Philosopher of December, guiding us through the murky phase in between and allowing us to dissolve in order to reform with more clarity.
