Summer Solstice Sun-day
Welcoming the heart of summer and the honouring the solar self
Happy Summer Solstice, wild ones! Today the sun reaches its highest point in the sky here in the Northern Hemisphere, and we welcome the solar peak of the seasonal cycle. With this in mind, it feels very fitting that this year (at least here in the UK) the Summer Solstice falls on a Sunday. The name of this day of the week comes from the Old English word Sunnandæg, which emerged from a Germanic interpretation of the Latin dies solis, meaning ‘sun's day’.
Infused with the fire element and its spark of energy and intensity, the sun is associated with qualities such as power, passion, confidence, leadership and strength. Astrologically, our sun sign represents our primary identity - the central archetype of our conscious self - and is the ‘planetary’ ruler of Leo, the fierce and prideful lion. This alignment with ego and individualism is further emphasised, of course, by the fact that the sun is not a planet at all, but a star: a symbol of bright, shining brilliance.
As a fire sign, Leo - alongside Aries and Sagittarius - is well known for its connotations of arrogance and dominance, with the common assumption being that power and leadership are synonymous with selfishness. Our society’s ‘leaders’ unfortunately support this narrative far too frequently, but countering this shadow side of solar energy is an alternative expression that frames inner sovereignty not as inflated self-importance, but as a deep sense of integrity. From this perspective, solar ‘brilliance’ becomes a beacon of light, courage, clarity and hope, rather than a suggestion of superiority.
When we know, trust and honour ourselves, we are so much more capable of meaningful connection with the world around us. ‘Integrity’, after all, shares etymological roots with ‘integration’ - the process of moving towards wholeness. This link reminds us that nurturing the many fragments of ourselves can help us tend more fully to the different parts of our lives - the relationships, responsibilities and situations that call for our care, and enrich us in return. In positioning our singular existence within the collective ecosystem, the solar self invites us to remember that true independence requires interdependence to thrive.
This Solstice Sun-day, honour your solar self by asking:
What does ‘inner sovereignty’ mean to me and how can I claim it without shame?
What do I soak up (receive) from my life/community, and what gifts of light do I shine out (offer)?
In which contexts/relationships do I feel energised, and in which do I feel depleted?
Where am I longing for more autonomy, and where am I longing for more connection or collaboration?
Feeding your flame
Next week we’ll be sharing the second set of posts in our seasonal Elemental Wisdom series for paid subscribers, this time exploring the fire element and its themes of intensity, integrity, and illumination.
The first post on Tuesday (23rd June) will share an overview of these themes and their relevance for summer, alongside an audio conversation between Maddy & Eleanor considering each of them in more depth.
Thursday’s follow-on post (25th June) will then take you on a ‘soul journey’ to reflect on your own relationship with the qualities of fire, as well as offering printable journal prompts to help you capture your insights.
We’re looking forward to helping you feed your inner flame! Upgrade to a paid subscription below if you’d like to read the posts when they arrive.
Midsummer ceremony replay
On Tuesday we gathered in our usual wildhearted way to celebrate the coming of the Solstice. We began by welcoming the associations of summer - fire, south, meadow, Mother; midday sun and full moon - before remembering the roots of this seasonal festival and connecting with its key themes of fullness, flourishing, and magic.
We recognised the Solstice (sol sistere) as a pause when the ‘sun stands still’, and took time to reflect - exploring our inner and outer worlds with the guidance of the queen bee and the hive, and taking a soul journey that led us to meet our wild selves by a midsummer fire. We closed by stepping through the Summer Solstice doorway in our minds, leaving what’s no longer needed at the threshold and welcoming our renewed visions for the second half of the season and beyond.
